How to Choose the Right Sanitary Fitting

Heat Numbers & Material Traceability

A heat number is a unique identifier stamped on every fitting that links the finished part back to the specific melt batch of stainless steel it was produced from. That link is the foundation of material traceability.

When steel is produced at the mill, it is assayed and the results are recorded in a Material Test Report (MTR) — also called a Certified Mill Test Report (CMTR) or Mill Certification. The MTR documents the actual measured chemical and physical properties of that heat: carbon, sulfur, chromium, nickel, and other alloying elements. Once the steel is processed into fittings, the heat number follows the part through manufacturing and is stamped on the finished product. If questions ever arise about a fitting’s alloy, performance, or regulatory compliance, the heat number provides a direct path back to documented source data.

Every Steel & O’Brien fitting ships with its MTR. For BPE fittings, MTRs are included in each shipment and are also available online. Every BPE fitting is permanently marked for full traceability back to the original stainless steel used to make the part.
